The country is divided into seven provinces. Three provinces located in the central valley and surrounding highlands where the majority of the population live are: San Jose, Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago. Each of these provinces also has a large city by the same name which can sometimes cause confusion. In the northern part of the country primarily consisting of the Nicoya Pennisula is the province of Guanacaste. The province of Puntarenas extends much of the length of the pacific coast all the way to the southern border with Panama. And the province on the Carribean coast is Limon.
