Ecotourism in Costa Rica
Ecotourism in Costa Rica has become an important part of the country's economy. The environmental efforts the country has done is a large contributor to the huge growth in tourism is recent years, as many natural areas have thankfully been protected with no chance for development.
Back in the 1970’s the country was being deforested for agriculture. Concerns were raised as to what this would do to the environment and the long term growth for the country. Fortunately there was some foresight to the ecological impact this would have and they did something which was very unique in Latin American countries at the time. Costa Rica began designating many areas as national parks and protected areas, to not be developed, and in so doing have been able to preserve many of their unique ecosystems.
