Costa Rica Development in Paradise

Costa Rica development started slowly. Traditionally tourism here has been on a small scale with small family run hotels and lodges. But this is changing quite quickly. Development started in the northern region of the country and has been moving south down the pacific coast.

The central pacific region of the country currently has the most development activity with many new developments and resorts under construction. And with a new international airport, new marinas and several new developments and resorts announced for the southern region, this area will also soon see a development and tourism boom.

The large scale developments in Costa Rica in recent years has been improving both the desirability of traveling to the country as well as increasing tourist demand. There is still some debate as to whether future tourism developments should continue to focus on the more traditional smaller eco-tourism hotels or whether the approach will be more of mass tourism similar to Cancun with plane loads of visitors staying in large mega-resorts. For now it seems they are trying to accommodate a bit of both.

And with the financial benefits from the increase in tourism, new operations are starting up all the time. The number of tourists visiting this country has doubled from the mid 1990’s and now approximately 1.5 million people visit Costa Rica each year. Costa Rica is also seeing an increase in visitors from Europe as well as from the US and Canada. New airlines have recently announced the introduction of new direct flights to the country. The increase in tourism has put a strain on the countries airport infrastructure. And while the country is struggling to keep up with the new demand air travel in Costa Rica is still quite convenient and very accessible.

Development in the southern region of the country is just beginning to emerge. Again learning from their past mistakes, government supported infrastructure development is being planned and completed along with any new tourist and housing developments. A new hospital has recently been built with a new international airport to be coming soon. The airport will be located just north of the town of Golfito. In addition several new marinas and resort developments are also planned for this area.
